The Facts
1848 – Paul Gauguin is born on the 7th June as Eugene Henri Paul Gauguin.
1849 – Gauguin and his family sail for Puru. Gauguin’s Farther dies on Route. He lives in lima with his Mother Aline and Sister Marie.
1853 – The family return to Orleans France.
1865 – Gauguin joins the merchant navy.
1867 – His mother Aline dies while Gauguin is at sea.
1873 – He marries Mette Gad.
1874 – Birth of their first child, Emile.
1877 – Birth of daughter Aline.
1879 – Exhibits at the impressionist exhibition.
1881 – Exhibits at the sixth impressionist exhibition. Dealer Durand Ruel buys the paintings. Birth of Jean Rene.
1883 – Loses his job as a stockbroker and concentrates on painting. Birth of Paul.
1884 – Mette returns to Denmark with family.
1886 – Gauguin travels to Pont-Aven in Brittany to paint.
1887 – Travels to Panama & Martinique.
1888 – Stays with Vincent Van Gogh in Arles.
1889 – First exhibition in Paris of the impressionist and synthetist group.
1891 – Travels to Copenhagen to say goodbye to his family then leaves for Tahiti.
1893 – Gauguin returns to Paris.
1895 – Goes back to Tahiti & builds himself a house.
1896 – Gauguin & Pahura have a daughter who dies shortly after birth.
1897 – Daughter Aline dies. Gauguin attempts suicide.
1898 – Pahura gives birth to son Emile.
1901 - Moves to the remote Marquesas Islands and builds a house where his Vahine Vaeoho gives birth to a daughter Tahiatik-amoata.
1903 – Gauguin dies on the 8th May.
